Have you ever noticed that things seem to work for you the way they should but at the wrong times? I’ve noticed this with couples. When your single all you see in the streets are couples holding hands, kissing in the movie theaters, taking pictures in a photo booth, eating out together…. That all changes the moment you’re with someone though. All of a sudden theres a swarm of guys (or girls…. which ever your preference) that are single and interested. Sometimes I’ve wondered if it’s a way that life tries to prove your love with the person your with.
Love… Now that’s a word that’s been slowly and painfully dieing in today’s society. It’s a word that by many, has been thrown around, steped on, spat on, and even used to wipe a few asses with. Paying close atention to “Mother Culture” (Ishmael by Daniel Quiin) you’ll notice how its constantly being corrupted by the media. The lyrics of todays top “love songs” speak about young ladies giving it all up (sexually) to the men who can buy them all that their little hearts desire. The song I’m in love with a stripper is another example. this song gives the misinterpretation of love as the lust or excitement a guy feels when they see a stripper “grindin on dat pole”. The sad part about all this is that the music leads you to believe that these two characters are actually in love.
Because of this deterioration of the meaning of love, you hear couples that just barely started going out saying to each other “I love you baby!”. However, with experience people realize that they don’t even truly know the person they are with until after some time of being together. It is impossible to truly love every aspect of a person within such short time. When people are trying to get with one another, they sometimes go to extreme limits to spice up their image. Mostly the guys will fill every conversation with white lies, and false past experiences to make themselves seem more interesting, while girls will usually pretend to be innocent and down to earth.
In reality, most men just try to impress girls and keep them blinded in every way possible from whats really up their sleeves. Most girls, on the other hand, are gullible and easily influenced by a guy who seems to have a lot to offer, whether it be love or material. Jewelers have even come up with commercials to portray diamonds as the ultimate symbol of a man’s love for a woman. Materialism such as this is even marketed to younger and younger ages.
Young couples even fuel the mainstream radio stations with dedications of false love songs and shout outs to their boo. It only gets worse during Valentines Day as a stuffed bear and a box of chocolates can lead to immature acts of sexuality. With such “great” efforts to show love, virginity among kids is usually lost during the years of middle school.
Personally, I think the media is to blame. The powerful combination of radio and television has marketed sappy love based material that any inexperienced lover can enjoy. Any seasoned relationship veteran knows to use the word love sparingly, as it can stir up emotions and egos when not used carefully. Its perfectly fine to like somebody or simply be infatuated, but just make sure that you know that you are being true to yourself and your feelings. To end this with a quote as best said by KRS One, love is a very serious thing; alot of people believe that the word love is real soft , but when you use that word in your vocabulary like you’re addicted to it, it sneaks right up and takes you out.

Hi Daniela! I am reading your blog because my sister Alison was reading it and thought it was interesting.
I loved your analysis regarding “love”. I personally agree with your opinion and I feel the same way when I hear those type of lyrics.
Keep writing, you are pretty good and I look foward to reading more of your writing.
Andrea! =)
